The Belizean Education System: An Overview
The education system in Belize is structured similarly to the British system and is mandatory for children between the ages of 6 and 14. The levels include: Primary School: 8 years (Infant I & II, followed by Standard 1-6) Secondary School (High School): 4 years Tertiary Education: Junior colleges (for Associate degrees) and universities (for Bachelor’s degrees), such as the University of Belize. The curriculum is taught in English, which is a significant advantage for children coming from North America and other English-speaking countries.
Public vs. Private Schools: What’s the Difference?
Most schools in Belize, both public and private, are managed through a partnership between the government and various religious denominations (primarily Catholic and Anglican).
Public Schools
Public schools are found in nearly every town and village. While tuition is generally free, there are associated costs for registration, uniforms, and books. The quality of public schools can vary significantly by location.
