Getting to Know the Mopan
The Mopan River flows through some of the most scenic countryside in Belize, passing the famous hand-cranked ferry at Xunantunich and the riverside village of Bullet Tree Falls before joining the Macal River near San Ignacio to form the Belize River. Its waters are typically clear and green, with gentle stretches perfect for swimming and floating, jungle-lined banks full of birdlife, and iguanas sunning themselves in the overhanging trees.
Tubing the Mopan
River tubing is the classic Mopan experience. Grab a tube, ease into the current, and let the river carry you downstream past jungle, farmland, and village life. It requires no experience and no effort, which is exactly the point.Wear water shoes, bring sunscreen, and keep your eyes on the trees. Kingfishers, herons, and iguanas are regular companions along the way. Guided tubing experiences can be arranged through Belize Hub Tours.
Swimming Spots for First Timers
The stretch of river at Bullet Tree Falls is one of the most popular and accessible swimming areas on the Mopan. The water is refreshing, the banks are shady, and on weekends the area fills with local families enjoying the river the way Belizeans have for generations.Dry season, from late November through May, brings the clearest water. Afternoon swims are the local tradition, timed perfectly to escape the heat of the day.
